Registration for Births & Deaths



A legislation of compulsory registration of Births&Deaths all over the country was passed in 1969 by the Government of India namely “Registration of Births and Deaths Act 1969". Nagaland legislative assembly adopted this act ( Act No. 18 of 1969) notified through Gazette notification Vide No.STAT/p-33/69 dated 24.06.1972.This Act came into effect from 18 Aug 1972.Under this Act Registration of Births&Deaths at the place of occurrence is compulsory. The Department of Economics&Statistics has been implementing this scheme since 01.08.1974 with the Development Commissioner as the Chief Registrar of Births&Deaths, Addl.Director of Eco&Stat as Joint Chief Registrar of Births&Deaths, Deputy Commissioner of every district as District Chief Registrar of Births&Deaths, District Statistical Officer as District Registrar of Births&Deaths and Block Development Officers as circle Registrar of Births&Deaths. With the passage of time, Government of India introduced Model Rules 1999 and directed all State/UT w.e.f from 01.01.2000, This Model Rule 1999 was approved by the Govt of Nagaland and notified through the Gazette Notification No.12 dated 30.09.2000.This empowers the VDB Secretaries of every village as the Registrars of Births&;Deaths w.e.f 01.06.2000 in the rural areas. as per 2001, No of registrars are as follows
No of Registrars of Births & Deaths comprising of rural & semi urban areas - 1092
No of Registrars in urban areas - 20
